Laid the conceptual basis of the Skill Poker Index, we move on to the practical elaboration of new theories with the next articles.
Definition of “information”
We often hear the definition of the post-modern society, the one we live in today, as an information society. It refers to the information-automation paradigm that characterizes our era, with the invention of the internet and the consequent development of new digital communication technologies. Information is a basic dimension of reality, alongside those of mass and energy, since it cannot be included among the latter [Anolli, 2012]. With the crossing of geographical boundaries and the immediacy with which it is possible to get in touch with anyone on the planet, the Internet and the development of computer-mediated communication (CMC) have imposed a new way of perceiving, understanding and interpreting reality. Abandoning the theories of social action dominated by a priori rationality, Weberian memory, to adopt the new theories of communication, according to which social action is governed by the psychological need of human beings to enter into relationship with others.
Information as perception of a difference
As previously mentioned, the first attempt to give a definition of communication is the mathematical model of Shannon and Weaver [1949] with the “Theory of Information“. It describes communication as a linear transmission of encoded information (message) from a sender A, via a signal, through a channel, to a decoder-receiver B. This theory is based on the definition of information as « perception of a difference» by Bateson, 1979, understood by Shannon himself [1949] as a discrete, observable and measurable magnitude. From this perspective information is not represented by the data itself, but by what will pass from the issuer to the receiver or, to use a definition more suitable for the purpose of the current study, «Information is the value of probability that is realized within many combinatorial possibilities (N choices) between H symbols» [Anolli, 2012]
